Legend has it, every First Nations guitar player will begin by learning a Slim Dusty song – the result of Slim’s deep respect for the people he met and the communities he traversed in his more-than-half-a-century-long career.

These performances will pair fresh reimaginings from Slim’s extensive catalogue with original new songs by First Nations artists who were inspired – in part – by Australia’s King of Country Music.

The show is a result of a 12-month mentorship of the musicians involved, with mentors including musicians from Black Image, BullDust and Topology.

The first free concert took place in Mount Isa at Outback at Isa on the 4th September 2024. It was a mix of reimagined Slim Dusty songs and originals with local musicians accompanied onstage by members of Topology, Black Image and BullDust.

‘Looking Forward, Looking Back’ is part of the Creative Heartlands Program, a Strategic Initiative of Topology | RASN North Queensland supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
